The constellation would be comprising 7 satellites of I-1K bus each weighing around 1450 Kilogrammes, with three satellites in the Geostationary Earth Orbit ( GEO ) and 4 in Geosynchronous Earth Orbit ( GSO ).

As the follow-on capability to the highly successful DSP, the SBIRS program consists of multiple Geosynchronous Earth Orbit ( GEO ) satellites, Highly Elliptical Orbit ( HEO ) sensors riding on Host satellites, and associated worldwide deployed ground systems.

In June 2014, the company was contracted by the United States Air Force on a fixed-price basis to build the fifth and sixth Geosynchronous Earth Orbit ( GEO ) satellites, known as GEO-5 and GEO-6, for the Space Based Infrared System at a cost of $ 1.86 billion.

The company intends the K-1 rocketships to become the reliable, low-cost providers of launch services for commercial and government payloads destined for Low Earth Orbit ( LEO ), Medium Earth Orbit ( MEO ), and Geosynchronous Earth Orbit ( GEO ), as well as for cargo resupply and recovery flights to and from the International Space Station ( ISS ).
